Must see trailers!

Trailers for some of the year's most anticipated blockbuster films were released in the past week. Check them out, I'll lead with my favorite:

Iron Man 2

Is there any reason you wouldn't watch this movie? I think not! I actually liked the tone of the first trailer better, it was funnier and more irreverent. Robert Downey Jr. reprises his role as the fast talking bad boy billionaire/savior of mankind Tony Stark/Iron Man. The trailer does a good job of outlining the plot. Mickey Rourke will play the villain Whiplash, but he seems to be bankrolled by some slick haired, white suitted corporate rival of Tony Stark who wants to build his own army of robot warriors. If you recall, the Afghan warlord who kidnapped Tony in the first movie wanted to do the same thing, but Obadiah Stane eliminated him before he got the chance. Seems like someone had the same idea, and that someone naturally succeeds since that someone is White. Fear not, Iron Man also gets some help in the form of War Machine, who's manned by his buddy Rhodey, no word on what happened to Terrence Howard (actually it was about money, surprise, surprise). Also Scarlett Johansson appears in the movie as Black Widow (I haven't read the comic book so I don't know who that is). Even more exciting, she's got red hair! One more cool thing, the Iron Man suit transforms into a briefcase. Badass!

Repo Men

My initial impression is action movie with an interesting premise and great leads. This movie reminds me of Street Kings, not in terms of plot but in that Forest Whitaker gets to play a ruthless bad guy, aka Denzel in Training Day. That alone makes for some explosive film making. The story gives it a lot of potential, but the director might fall into the trap of taking himself and the work too seriously. As long as Jude Law stays grounded in his performance and the story moves along at a good action-movie pace, then it should be fine.

Tron Legacy

Unfortunately I had a very deprived childhood and didn't see many classic movies until recently. One of the ones I've missed is the original Tron movie. Fans of Chuck (and nerds in general) will surely know of the movie, or at least its title. The trailer seems to suggest it's about this kid searching for his father, who mysteriously disappeared some years ago inside a video game/program. The visuals looks very impressive, and Jeff Bridges stars in the movie, which is a great sign. The suits with the lighted strips running all along the body reminds me of Bane from Batman Beyond and some other famous villains (Minority Report maybe? I can't put my hands on it). Not much else to say really.

Robin Hood

A new collaboration between Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe. Those two obviously know what they're doing since the last time they teamed up Crowe won an Academy Award for Maximus in Gladiator. Scott is of course a legendary director, with works such as Blade Runner, Alien, Gladiator, American Gangster and Thelma and Louise to his credit. He's more Spielberg than Scorsese though, since he has a knack for delivering on action flicks that appeals to the masses as well as the critics. The story seems to focus less on Robin Hood as a kind hearted bandit that robs the rich and helps the poor, and rather more akin to Spartacus, leader of a rebellion/resistance that fights against an oppressive King John to protect their land and rights. Hmm I wonder if it's the same King John that signed the Magna Carta... Oh I almost forgot, the gorgeous Cate Blanchett is here too, starring as Maid Marian. Not really sure what her role is, but I see her in armor so maybe she's a Mulan-esque character? Or maybe she's just like Keira Knightley in King Arthur. You guys can find an HD version of the above trailer here.

You should have learned that IRONMAN's suit can turn into a briefcase in high school. If you can't understand that drop the website.

Iron Man 2, Repo Man, and Tron looks solid. In fact, I'd say Repo Man should probably take itself seriously. It reminds me of the Bourne trilogies -- a coldblooded assassin suddenly finds motives to fight against everything he's done in the past.

Tron just seems like a Star Trek v2.0, which seems find to me.

But I have doubts about Robin Hood, because they change the character so much. It reminds me of King Authur, which I personally didn't have too much problem with, but it's just kind of ridiculous to see the entire story being changed so much. I think English majors might have a lot of problems with that.

I think Robin Hood was originally a rebel leader, but most people know him as the king of thieves. There's a previous movie that told a similar story, so it's not unprecedented.
