Frank Rich, op-ed columnist for the NY Times delivered a scathing attack on the GOP and their "heroic" solidarity in opposition to the Obama stimulus bill (see link below). here's my favorite paragraph:
"This G.O.P., a largely white Southern male party with talking points instead of ideas and talking heads instead of leaders, is not unlike those “zombie banks” that we’re being asked to bail out. It is in too much denial to acknowledge its own insolvency and toxic assets. Given the mess the country is in, it would be helpful to have an adult opposition that could pull its weight, but that’s not the hand America has been dealt."
-They sure showed that Obama
this is why i hope that the change that Obama promised will be post-partisan rather than bi-partisan politics. the GOP has been reduced to a party of irrelevant ideologues who rather appear on cable news screaming their heads off about how the plan we have will definitely not work, than to spend any time thinking about what will work.
as i have mentioned before, the GOP's worst characteristic isn't their arrogance or misguided attempts at defining patriotism and foreign policy, but rather a deep-seated cynicism about the american people. bi-partisan politics involving the Republicans as they are now is doomed to fail, since republicans care about elections and grandstanding to their "constituents" and not about america (they don't even like america). perhaps it's time for a new opposition party to emerge and restore the nation to a real two party system.
