Grossing nearly 40 million dollars in the last four days, Avatar has moved past Pirates 3 and Return of the King as the second highest grossing movie of all time. Here's how the race to the top looks -
Titanic - $1,842,879,955
Avatar - $1,131,752,464
Here's a cool feature from Boxofficemojo called Cameron Clash, which compares the top grossing James Cameron movies. One thing I found interesting is that all of his top money making flicks had considerable foreign audiences. His top 4 movies - Titanic, Avatar, True Lies and Terminator 2 - all made over 60% of their worldwide gross from foreign countries.
In the end, whether Avatar supplants Titanic or not, directing 2 billion dollar movies will certainly help James Cameron challenge Steven Spielberg as the king of Hollywood, giving him greater artistic freedom and control, and that's certainly a good thing for movie fans around the world.

I don't think Spielsberg is a bad director though. The last Indiana Jones movie wasn't as strong, but I liked a lot of his work.
