Starting the new year right

Avatar once again helped fuel a record weekend at the box office. The movie is exhibiting the same resilience as another James Cameron mega-hit, drawing over $68 million, falling barely 10% from last week. It also became the second fastest movie to break $300 million in domestic receipts (although it is helped by the more expensive 3-D tickets). Incredibly it has already outgrossed the Dark Knight in merely 3 weeks!

Hmmm, this triggers another interesting race... will Avatar eventually surpass Titanic and become the highest grossing movie of all time? Here's what it looks like so far (figures provided by boxofficemojo.com):

Avatar - $1,018,811,000
Titanic - $1,842,879,955

What do you guys think?

It should, give it a bit more time. We're experiencing recession right now, after all.

I read the other week that it had already surpassed Titanic's 44 day gross in 15 days so it looks like it has a good chance of passing it up.
