David Brooks offers an op-ed review of Avatar, from his typically incisive political/social perspective. Looks like he would agree with my assessment and withholding the CONTENDER rating from it. Thanks Flora.
One thing, he mentions that the complex is a product of our era (presumably contemporary, i.e. 1980s and later), but it actually has a much longer history, stemming the need to justify colonialism and imperialism. The most famous example is Rudyard Kipling's White Man's Burden
