A very inspirational post by Steven D. Levitt (co-author of Freakonomics on his blog today) that gives me hope; apparently chicks dig econ majors (yes!!!! http://www.freakonomics.com/blog/)
Anyway finished reading The Losers' Club by Richard Perez, found it to mirror my life in a number of fascinating yet terrifying ways (the main character's 27!!!). The dude of the book, Martin is a down on his luck writer; can't get published, lives in Queens not the village, and works at a dead end import export clerical job that he hates, and has to resort to the personals in order to meet women (a total of 3).
Long story short, he meets Nikki his perfect girl, but she turns out to be in a lesbian relationship, and then meets two other girls who in turn dump him or scar him for life (ouch). The story in the end turns out to have a semi happy ending when Marty gets fired from his job (breaks free from the capitalist and materialistic society that he hates) and manages to salvage the relationship with Nikki.
Throughout most of the book, Martin seems to be constantly preoccupied with waiting for things to happen (how apropos), whether it's obsessively checking his messages, sitting by the phone waiting for responses to his personal ad that seldomly came, waiting for his boss to yell at him to lecture him on y not to be late or reading the nightly rejection letters that came from countless magazines and periodicals, Martin doesn't seem to take any initiative beyond the same tired routin that he follows day after day, that is except when it comes to the girl he can not have.
Why do we always want the things we cannot have? Is it the thrill of the chase, or the temptation of the forbidden fruit? Or maybe as the author notes we are just masochistic losers. Oh well that was a really pretentious post, but I'm recommending the post, if for nothing else than the assorted varieties of spanish curses that I learned, but hopefully it'll make you think a little bit about your life.
Mierda happens...
